Dilophosaurus

Dilophosaurus is a carnivorous dinosaur that lived in the early Jurassic period. It is about 6-7 meters long and slender. It has two irregular crests on its head that are approximately semi-elliptical or tomahawk-shaped, hence the name Dilophosaurus.

Dilophosaurus has many small and sharp teeth; short forelimbs and long and strong hind limbs. It walks on its hind limbs and moves agilely; its tail is long and powerful, which can keep the body balanced when walking.

Origin of the name

Dilophosaurus is a genus of theropod dinosaur that lived in the Early Jurassic. Its scientific name comes from the ancient Greek "two-crowned lizard" because it has two crowns on its head. The first specimen was described in 1954, but it was not named Dilophosaurus until more than a decade later.

Archaeological Discovery

The first three specimens of Dilophosaurus were discovered by paleontologist Samuel Paul Welles in the summer of 1943.

These three specimens were sent to the University of California, Berkeley, for cleaning and mounting, and were then thought to be a species of Megalosaurus, Megalosaurus wetherilli.

In 1970, Samuel Paul Welles returned to the site of the fossil find and dated the site, and discovered a new specimen. This new specimen had two distinct crests, and it was confirmed to be a separate genus, named Dilophosaurus wetherelli. Then in 1984, he fully redescribed Dilophosaurus again.

One specimen of Wells's Dilophosaurus was found to have pathological signs in the spine, possibly due to injury or compression, and the humerus may have signs of abscesses.

Another specimen of Wells's Dilophosaurus had a very thick right forelimb, but an abnormally small left humerus, which may be a congenital deformity or developmental reasons during growth.

In 2001, Bruce Rothschild et al. published a study on stress fractures in theropod dinosaurs. They studied 60 Dilophosaurus foot bones and found no signs of stress fractures.

Morphological characteristics

Dilophosaurus is about 6-7 meters long and weighs half a ton.

The most obvious feature of Dilophosaurus is a pair of irregularly shaped crests on its head that are approximately semi-elliptical or battle-axe-shaped. These crests are quite fragile and cannot be used as weapons. They may be a visual identification object.

Another feature of the skull is that there is a concave section between the premaxilla and the maxilla, forming a gap between the premaxilla teeth and the maxilla teeth, similar to spinosaurs and crocodiles. Their teeth are long, but the roots are short.

Early hypotheses speculated that Dilophosaurus was a scavenger based on these tooth characteristics, because the front teeth were not enough to kill prey and bite off pieces of meat.

A 2020 study showed that Dilophosaurus had a thick mandible, which could provide Dilophosaurus with a strong bite force, so Dilophosaurus was a ferocious predator.

Distribution:

Dilophosaurus lived in the Early Jurassic period and was discovered in Arizona, USA.

Living habits

Dilophosaurus was a top predator, much larger than the second largest carnivorous dinosaur in the same area, the 30 kg Coelophysis (Coelophysis in the same area as Dilophosaurus is sometimes regarded as an independent genus, Synapsid).

The largest herbivorous dinosaur in the area was Sarasaurus, which weighed 200 kg and was much smaller than Dilophosaurus. Dilophosaurus could easily prey on Sarasaurus.

There are fossils of wading footprints of Dilophosaurus. There is a groove on the snout of Dilophosaurus, just like Spinosaurus, so some people speculate that Dilophosaurus also ate fish.

Popular culture

The Dilophosaurus first appeared in the 1984 science fiction novel Carnosaur, in which a Dilophosaurus bit a British MP to death.

The Dilophosaurus appeared in the 1993 film Jurassic Park and the original novel of the same name Jurassic Park. In the film version, the Dilophosaurus has a retractable neck wrinkle, similar to a pleated parasol lizard, and can shoot blinding venom, blinding and paralyzing its prey, similar to a venomous cobra (fossils show that the Dilophosaurus did not have this behavior).

Steven Spielberg, the director of the film version, reduced the size of the Dilophosaurus to a small dinosaur with a length of 1.5 meters and a height of 0.9 meters. In the film's citation, this small Dilophosaurus is explained as a juvenile individual.

In the novel version of Jurassic Park, the adult Dilophosaurus is 3 meters tall and 5 meters long, has no wrinkles, but has poisonous saliva, which comes in handy when biting prey.

After the park researchers discovered the problem, they planned to remove the venom glands, but they had to kill the Dilophosaurus, which was opposed by the park's owner, John Hammond.

The video game "ParaWorld" refers to the image of Dilophosaurus in "Jurassic Park". Another dinosaur-themed game "Jurassic Wars" describes Dilophosaurus as spitting out poisonous saliva, just like the movie's narrative.

In the 2003 265-episode Chinese science cartoon "Blue Cat's Three Thousand Questions about the Dinosaur Era", Dilophosaurus was also described as a Jurassic monster dinosaur that sprays highly toxic and corrosive saliva.

The 2009 animated film "Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs" also refers to the poisonous animal setting of "Jurassic Park".

The video game "Turok" released in 2008 describes Dilophosaurus as a medium-sized non-toxic dinosaur.

A Dilophosaurus was also seen on the television show When Dinosaurs Roamed America, where it killed an Anchisaurus and scared off a group of Synapsids.
